One of the fun things about home school has been being able to pick lots of good books to read with Lexey. The books we read here are waaaaayyyyy better than the (dumb) text books at school. Clare was lucky to have a second grade teacher who read amazing read aloud books and got Clare hooked on reading. I'm trying to do the same for Lexey this year.
Here are some of the books we read this year with Lexey's rankings.
Magic Tree House books 9
- lions at lunchtime
- tigers
- stallion
- titanic
Mercy Watson Series 5
Clementine's letter 2
Trumpet of the Swan 10
Mr. Poppers Penguins
Ivy and Bean
People Magazine Survivors 10
Ivy and Bean series --- we read this late in the year (march/april) and it was fun to see Lexey really take off on her reading in this series. It was the first time she read on her own and was so excited about a story she couldn't put a book down.

Surprise!
A couple of months ago when Jessica had a surprise party Lexey said she wanted a surprise party, so we went ahead an planned one. Of course she didn't remember saying she wanted the surprise and spent weeks thinking up different things she might want to do for her birthday. It was helpful for me to have her input. We had the party 10 days before her real birthday so she was still thinking we had a couple of weeks to talk about her birthday
Here are all the cute faces that met her as she walked in the door, saying "Surprise!"
The kids were all very excited to be part of the surprise. Here they are waiting for lexey to come home.
She was surprised. She didn't know what to think.
We had a great party...decorated goodie bags, made fruit loop necklaces, played pass the present..
We also played the balloon game where one player from each team dressed up in Dave's clothes and the teammates filled the clothes with balloons.
Lexey isn't a big fan of cake so she requested worms and dirt. Some of the kids were really worried when we said "we're having dirt for dessert" but most figured out it was going to be yummy. one of the girls insisted she would not eat the dirt. So cute!
Love my little lexey!
She still has a few little birthday activities coming up .. family dinner and lunch with bob/kari, which has become a favorite b-day tradition.
